The deal, first reported by The Information, would bring PlayAI’s emotionally expressive speech generation under Meta’s umbrella, potentially supercharging Meta’s ambitions in AI avatars, creator tools, and multimodal assistants.

PlayAI’s demo videos, which surfaced earlier this year, showcased startlingly lifelike voices capable of capturing emotional nuance and prosody far beyond today’s standard TTS engines. Insiders suggest the company has developed proprietary models capable of one-shot voice cloning with high fidelity — making it a formidable alternative to OpenAI’s Voice Engine or ElevenLabs.

The rumored acquisition follows hot on the heels of Meta's partial acquisition of Scale AI announced just weeks ago.
